| New Milton Sand and Ballast has an active commitment to maintaining the environment. This is demonstrated by the company planting 16,000 trees and shrubs at New Milton, Downton and Pennington from the period 1992 - 2004, not required as a condition of planning. Additional environmental initiatives include the creation of new habitats at Manor Farm, Pennington, with two lakes to support Keyhaven Marshes. In conjunction with Hampshire County Council and Hampshire Waste Services, two balancing ponds will be created, especially to replenish fresh water to the marshes. Western Balancing Pond This area has previously been extracted and in-filled with inert waste and the balancing pond has been designed to feed water to the marshes in the summer time. The area is renowned for migrating birds and the islands act as a haven from predators. The area has been carefully planted and is now in its second year. Translocation of Grasses New Milton Sand and Ballast and Onyx Hampshire Waste Services Ltd jointly funded the translocation of turf containing the rare Divided Sedge belonging to the coastal Marshes near Lymington. Translocation of the grasses rescued colonies of important plants from mineral development. Mineral and Waste Consultants, Robert Long and Ecologist, Jonathan Cox ensured the approval and supervision of the scheme while Hampshire County Council were the approving authority. Corex Divisa is a rare grass as it has four leaves instead of three. |
