In 1919 John Charles Roffey settled on an 8 acre site in Throop, Bournemouth and set up a market garden at Stockwell Nurseries. The business continued to grow until around the Second World War.
After leaving school his sons John (Jack) and Harry Roffey joined their father on the nursery. After John Charles’ retirement Jack and Harry continued with the nursery and market garden.
Using experience gained in producing potting composts for their own use, Jack and Harry started supplying quality composts to other growers and to newly emerging Garden Centres. In their first year of commercial production around 90 tons was produced and sold.
The brothers were keenly involved with sports, particularly golf and bowls, and through their passion for these games identified a need for quality dressings and rootzones to enhance the playing experience. So the progression from nursery, grower and market garden enterprise in Throop evolved to that of a manufacturer and supplier of quality dressing, rootzones, sands, soils and growing media.
After Jack and Harry sold the Roffey Brothers business in 1984, it maintained its established trading name over the intervening years until 2011when H.H. & D.E. Drew Ltd, who had been supplying Roffey Ltd with sands, soils and aggregates, purchased the business assets of the company.
Roffey Brothers is now an important division of the H.H & D.E. Drew Ltd “family of businesses" as part of product development and improvement, production was incorporated with sand and soil processing at other sites within the company. As a result, the Throop Road site closed at the end of 2015 and trade and retail operations moved to New Milton for the sales of sports sands and Rootzones, and also the collection of composts and growing media, chemicals and fertilisers. The Roffey brand is also expanding through compost and growing media products now being available at many Drew Group outlets.
