Meet Matthew Burgoyne, Welding & Mobile Engineer, aka “the fitter”
I was actually part of a sub-contracting team that helped install a state-of-the-art new wash plant at the New Milton site back in 2019 and then joined as a full-time employee, in what I think was referred to as ‘lockdown part one’, in July 2020.
I have a busy and varied role that takes me across all sites from our Wareham quarry to our landscaping hub in Holbury. I’m responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of most of the machinery. This means through carrying out planned maintenance I can see a problem before it’s a problem. However, it’s inevitable machinery breaks down, bearings go, cracks happen, and having my role in the company means I can prioritise my workload to enable me to jump onto issues straight away. Hopefully meaning minimal impact and less downtime for the site teams.
Before I joined the company, I had my own welding business for 17 years working in structural steel and fabrication. It’s a hands-on role which in all honesty is hard work, but I love it. I love the creativity and skill it needs to keep things working. I love seeing positive changes when technology and machines can help improve productivity, and when we install something that ensures a safer system of working or a better impact on the environment, it gives me great pride.
I enjoy working for the company and chose to move down to this area from London because of this role. As I get to meet so many people across the company, from site managers to drivers, pickers and operatives, I have learnt a lot and look forward to continuing to develop my role.
