Exciting news for our feathered friends in Highcliffe!
We have recently been involved on a brilliant project with CHOG, BCP Council, The Parks Foundation, and the New Milton Mens Shed to create a brand new House Martin tower (aka the hotel) at the Hoburne housing estate.
Following the success of the first House Martin tower at our Milford Quarry, CHOG approached us with a vision to provide a dedicated nesting space for the House Martins who regularly visit the area but were struggling to build suitable nests, finding eaves not always the perfect solution.
We jumped at the chance to collaborate, and for over a year, we've worked together to provide a safe and ideal nesting environment for the House Martins who visit the area each year.
Thanks to the incredible carpentry skills of the New Milton Mens Shed and the support of The Parks Foundation and BCP Council, this vision has become a reality. The new tower, complete with a small pond, offers a dedicated and welcoming home for these protected birds.
House Martins are a protected species in the UK under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. This makes it an offense to intentionally kill, injure, or take a wild House Martin, or to take, damage, or destroy their nests while in use or being built. Furthermore, while they are not currently classified as "endangered" on a global scale, their populations have suffered significant declines in the UK, leading to them being listed as Red under the Birds of Conservation Concern. This "Red List" status indicates that they are of the highest conservation priority and require urgent action.
The official opening on Saturday 26th April 2025 was a great success, with lots of local interest in this wonderful addition to the community.
